The new coffee shop, planning to open in February 2012, will be named The Old Post Office, and is aiming to service the finest coffee and tastiest cakes in the area.  The Old Post Office is selling ethical coffee and food products and will be open 7 days a week.

Wokingham Borough Council has approved a proposal to remove eight parking bays from High Street due to road safety concerns.

The order, which may last for up to a year, will be introduced in early August, once the current roadworks and resurfacing are complete.

More than half of the bays between School Lane and Wargrave Hill will be removed and double yellow lines will be painted.

Gaps will be created between the remaining bays, which will increase the width of the high street for drivers.

The move has been welcomed by Wargrave Parish Council, residents and the police.

Dick Bush, chairman of the parish council, said: “The problem with the high street is the safety issue, which has been reported by the police. This is a large factor in us getting behind this experimental order and we are willing to see if it works.

“People do park on the high street all the time so I am sure there will be other issues coming to light regarding parking.”

Cllr Bush said that although the car park in School Lane was free to use at night, there were concerns regarding the safety of vehicles.

“We would like to work with the borough council to see if we can review the car park fees and offer half an hour of free parking,” he said.

“This may also help the library, as we have noticed that most of the other libraries in the borough have at least some free parking.”

Atilla Seril, traffic engineer at the borough council, said: “We have been discussing this since 2009 but this year we decided to go ahead.

“Generally there’s a strong safety concern in the area so we believe it will be permanent. The purpose is to eliminate possible collisions.

“However, we need to see how it works so we may amend the number of bays and the length of the bays.

“During this time we will also be receiving all the objections and we will do some site visits to see how it works out, particularly at peak times.”
